Dental Services
Tooth extraction
At Adelaide Dental Emergency, we aim to make all tooth extractions as painless as possible and our patients have the option of being referred, if they so wish, to our friendly oral surgeon for sedation.
Toothache
If you’re suffering from toothache, Adelaide Dental Emergency can help. We recommend seeking treatment as soon as possible, as untreated toothache can develop into an infection and could lead to root canal treatment.
Broken/cracked teeth
If you’ve broken or cracked a tooth eating or due to an accident or trauma, contact Adelaide Dental Emergency immediately so we can assess the damage and repair your tooth.
Mouth guards
Made by a dental technician, professionally fitted mouth guards are worn by AFL and NRL players, and provide the highest protection from sporting and other such injuries. At Adelaide Dental Emergency, we can assist you in getting a mouth guard so you can protect your teeth during any impact sports.
Anyone playing contact sports should wear a mouth guard, including those who participate in:
Root canal therapy
If the root of a tooth has become infected, root canal therapy may be required. The treatment involves removing the tooth nerve, sterilising the area and filling the cavity, before placing a crown on top.
Root canal treatment is usually required as a result of:
- Decay infecting the nerve (pulp) of the tooth
- Infection at the tip or apex of the root
- Trauma - a broken tooth can expose the nerve inside the tooth, leaving it open to infection
Please note, root canal is very time-consuming and costly. In some cases, it may require input from an endodontist.
Swollen and bleeding gums
Bleeding gums, or gingivitis, are generally caused by poor oral hygiene, which results in the build-up of plaque and tartar. If tartar is allowed to build up it results in bad breath (halitosis), as well as shrinking gums and ultimately, severe gingivitis. With proper oral hygiene and professional tooth cleaning, gingivitis can be effectively treated.
Tartar cannot be removed at home, so we recommend that patients come to Adelaide Dental Emergency for a professional clean every six months. Swollen gums can also be caused by medication, pregnancy, or gingivitis. If this is an issue for you, please get in touch with one of our practices.
Wisdom teeth
When your wisdom teeth come through, the adjacent gums can become sore and swollen, which can literally happen overnight (pericoronitis). The reason for this is that there may not be enough space for the teeth to erupt straight – resulting in impacted wisdom teeth.
Wisdom teeth can cause crowding, infection, and damage to nearby molars. At Adelaide Dental Emergency, we can extract the affected tooth or refer you to our oral maxillofacial surgeon for a general anaesthetic or IV sedation.
Any wisdom teeth that are not removed will still need to be monitored, as they can pose problems later in life. Regular dental check-ups are important to monitor your wisdom teeth, and dental conditions that may affect your overall oral health.
Wisdom teeth may need to be removed due to:
Abscesses
Tooth pain, a bitter taste in the mouth, halitosis (bad breath) and swollen gums or neck glands can all be signs of an abscess, which occurs when pus collects at the root of a tooth or between the gum and a tooth.
Abscesses can also be caused by:
